Galego Community Farm Projects

Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) is a nationally recognized leader in urban agriculture, and has worked since 1981 to transform land in the Greater Providence area into 52 community gardens and urban farms. SCLT connects people with land, education and the resources necessary to build just food systems and healthy communities.

I have shared my hand papermaking skills to help invigorate the farm at Galego Court, offering SCLT an innovative way to build community, expand the reach of existing programs, and provide access to high quality artistic education otherwise unavailable to the youth and adults they serve. Papermaking from plant fibers sourced from the farm itself is a creative and unique way to incorporate arts and environmental education into their current programming.

Together over several years I have co-created pulp paintings and taught papermaking skills at Galego Community Farm, located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

This work inspired Pawtucket Paper Center, a creative place-making, community papermaking center that has a completed ‘prototype’ phase.

Galego Community Farm papermaking activities have been generously supported by volunteer effort, and partnership with Southside Community Land Trust, the Pawtucket Housing Authority, Rhode State Council on the Arts, and the Pawtucket Arts Festival.
