Spring Artist Talks, 2023

I've got a BUNCH of artist talks/events/happenings coming in hot this spring.

(I'm not sure how I got wrangled into doing so many in a row, but hey I'm game if you are.)

Join in if you can!

Paper, Plants, and Identity (Online, Thursday April 27, 2023, 1pm EST)

I'm honored to be invited to speak for Dieu Donné's Virtual Education Series.

"May Babcock's artwork uses foraged plant fibers for papermaking to engage with both the materiality of place and discovery of multiracial identity. In this talk, the artist will take a deep dive into how we collectively talk about plants from other places (think of the words 'invasive' or 'native') and her work towards an ecocentric way of thinking about problematic plants, humans, and nature. This program is pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $5.00."

Artist Talk at the Fitchburg Art Museum (In-Person, Sunday, April 30, 1pm)

Okay, so this one's in-person, so you've got to be close-ish Fitchburg, Massachusetts to attend. It also happily coincides with the Fitchburg Art Museum's Art in Bloom event, so you'll get to look at beautiful floral arrangements AND art. These are two of my favorite things, and I'm so there for it. And feel honored to be speaking.

"Meet exhibiting artist May Babcock for a conversation about her work in the Paper Town exhibition. Places and plant matter are intrinsically tied in May Babcock's paper making process. Participants are welcome to ask questions, make observations and new connections during these dialogues."

Free with museum admission.

This is more of a 'mark your calendars for' reminder for now, because I don't believe there is an official registration link yet. I'll send you more info on this one as I receive it. I'm so excited to be part of this panel/film showing/discussion because it intersects art and the environment. And we get to talk about rivers!

Lamina and A Living Archive: A Presentation by Artists May Babcock and Lindsey Beal (Online, Friday, May 12 at Noon EST)

I'm excited to be presenting with Lindsey Beal for the Photography Network. We will be online talking about our work, and our 2 collaborations.

"The Photography Network is excited to host a conversation between research-based artists May Babcock and Lindsey Beal, both located in the Providence area. The two will discuss their individual practices as well as their recent collaborations, Lamina and A Living Archive, experimental integrations of cyanotypes and anthotypes and creative papermaking techniques. The talk will explore their use of natural materials—such as pokeberries—in their papermaking and photographic processes and how their most recent project explores the larger histories of industry within New England.

Photography Network membership is required to attend.
